Students from EEA countries and Switzerland

Students who are citizens of EEA member states or Switzerland may enter Austria with a valid travel document without a further visa. Students who stay for more than three months have to register with the competent authority (municipal administration or district commission) in order to receive a certificate confirming their right of residence. The following documents have to be submitted:

  • Passport or identity card
  • Proof of sufficient health insurance (e.g. european health insurance card) or student's insurance
  • Proof of sufficient financial means
  • Confirmation of admission at an educational institution

This registration has to be conducted in addition to the one at the registration office.

Students from third countries

Students enrolled in FH degree programmes who are citizens of third countries need a residence permit for educational purposes in order to enter and stay in Austria. Basically the application for a residence permit has to be conducted at a competent Austrian representative authority (embassy or consulate) before entering Austria. Students from Japan or the U.S. and all students who are allowed to enter the country without further registration can also file their applications in Austria.

The following documents have to be submitted with the application:
  • completely filled-in and signed form of application for a residence permit
  • recent photograph
  • valid passport (copies of all pages)
  • Birth certificate (copy)
  • confirmation of admission at a course-providing body
  • Police clearance certificate
  • Proof of sufficient financial means

The residence permit has to be prolonged before its termination. Students from third countries need an allowance of employment for all non-independent occupations that are subject to the Law of Foreign Employment. The employer has to apply for an allowance of employment at the Public Employment Service Austria (AMS). Most of the allowances of employment are only granted for slight occupations.

Visa

If admission to the FH degree programme has not been granted and the applicants need a visa, they are to apply for a residence permit and a visa at the same time. They will receive the residence permit from the competent domestic authority after admission has finally been granted.
