Doctorial studies

Students who have successfully completed an FH Master's programme or an FH diploma degree programme are entitled to enrol for relevant doctoral programmes at a university. If the study period of an FH Master's programme or an FH diploma degree programme is shorter than that of corresponding university degree programmes, the doctoral study period will be extended to make up the difference.
Possible doctoral programmes and the required additional courses and examinations are laid down in a regulation by the FH Council together with the competent body of the relevant university. If such a regulation is not issued within three months after the accreditation of the degree programme in question, the competent federal minister will issue such a regulation. The additional courses and examinations are to be selected in light of the specific professional requirements of the dissertation (cf. section 5 sub-sections 3 and 3a of the Fachhochschule Studies Act (Fachhochschul-Studiengesetz, FHStG) as amended).

Doctoral programmes for international FH graduates

The admission of international FH graduates to doctoral programmes at Austrian universities falls under the jurisdiction of the rectorate of the university in question. In the course of the admission procedure, the rectorate is to verify if the completed foreign FH degree programme is equivalent to the one in his own field of competence. Basically, graduates of foreign FH degree programmes can also be admitted to such a doctoral programme if the completed degree programme is comparable to an FH diploma or FH Master's degree programme in Austria in terms of length, structure and requirements. No recognition ("Nostrifizierung") is necessary for international FH graduates to be admitted to a doctoral programme at an Austrian university. If a degree programme is almost equivalent and only a few extra classes or examinations are necessary for it to be fully equivalent, the rectorate is entitled to stipulate exams during the doctoral programme in addition to the doctoral viva (Rigorosum) exam to determine equivalence.

More information on doctoral programmes is available from the central administrative offices of the Austrian universities. Regulations for doctoral programmes for Fachhochschulen can be downloaded from the website of the competent Federal Ministry.
