Bologna Process
The quality of higher education is pivotal for creating the European higher-education sector. Integration into the European higher-education sector is the main focus of the internationalisation efforts of the Austrian FH sector. In this context, the so-called Bologna Process plays a significant role (cf. Federal Ministry for Education, Science and Culture - Bologna Process). In creating a European higher-education area the European Council moves forward in implementing its strategic goal, i.e. making Europe "the most competitive and dynamic knowledge-based economy in the world, capable of sustainable economic growth with more and better jobs and greater social cohesion" (cf. Lisbon European Council of 23 and 24 March 2000).
This goal is to be implemented by taking the following measures:
- Promoting international co-operation in the field of quality assurance;
- Introducing a system that is primarily based on two major cycles;
- Promoting the mobility of students and teachers;
- Introducing a credit system;
- Promoting the European dimension of teaching and training in the higher-education sector;
- Promoting the attractiveness of European education and training;
- Lifelong learning.

Internationalisation and quality assurance
International co-operation in the area of external quality assurance has greatly increased over the past few years. As part of the so-called Bologna Process, the quality of higher education is pivotal for creating a European higher-education and research sector (cf. bm:bwk - Bologna-Prozess).
The education ministers of the European states of the Bologna Process, now numbering about 40, have committed themselves to promoting the further development of quality assurance at institutional, national and European level. They also emphasised the necessity of developing mutually recognised criteria and methods of quality assurance.

Internationalisation in the FH sector
The amendments to the Fachhochschule Studies Act (Fachhochschul-Studiengesetz, FHStG) of 2002 and 2004 created the statutory bases to implement important goals of the Bologna Process.
The possibility of setting up Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes, the obligatory use of the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS), the issue of the Diploma Supplement as well as an English translation of the diploma were introduced.
The students and teachers of FH degree programmes are entitled to participate in the Socrates programmes.
The results of a research project of the FH Council on the "Internationalisation in the Austrian FH sector" have been published in the FH Council's publication series.
